The legend behind the Story of Jogulamba

The immolation of Sati devi is mentioned in the legend of the Shakthipeethas. Sati jumped into the yang fire and set herself on fire after her father, Daksha, insulted her husband, Shiva.

Veerabadhara, the manifestation of Shiva’s wrath, killed Daksha. The universe started to shake just below the Lord’s feet as he translated his fury into the celestial dance, the Tandava.

To calm the Lord, Lord Vishnu cut the body of Sati into numerous pieces using his Sudarshana Chakra. The body parts landed in various locations across the subcontinent, where there were temples to the goddess Rose.

The Jogulamba temple is located in Alampur, where Devi’s upper jaw falls.
