Main deity: Shiva

Festivals: Maha Shivratri

According to Hindu mythology, Trimbakeshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are believed to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. It is said that the origin of the Godavari River is at the Brahmagiri Mountain, where the Trimbakeshwar Temple is located.

Godavari river is the second-longest river in peninsular India.

After Nagpur, Mumbai, and Pune, Nashik is regarded as the fourth-largest city in Maharashtra.

Nashik is renowned as one of the 12 Kumbh Mela pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Nashik is significant in history, culture, society, and mythology.

The temple’s architecture blends the Nagara style of architecture from North India and the Dravidian style from South India.

The Trimbakeshwar Temple is known for its unique features, including the presence of three lingams (representations of Lord Shiva), which are said to symbolize Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.

The temple also has a sacred pond called Kushavarta, where devotees take a dip to purify themselves before entering the temple.

It is particularly famous for celebrating the Maha Shivaratri festival, held annually with great pomp and show. The festival attracts thousands of devotees who come to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

The main factors that attract devotees to Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple worldwide

“JYOTIRLINGA” stands for the PrakashStambha, also known as the “Pillar of Light.” This divine one is the only Jyotirlinga in India that symbolizes Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Shiva (Triymbakraj).

The actual Trimbakeshwar Shiva Linga has a very different structure than the other 11 jyotirlingas.

Instead of the “Linga” from which the sacred Ganga river springs, there are three tiny holes, or “lingas,” about the size of a thumb.

These three lingas represent the Trimurti, composed of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha, known as the universe’s Creator, Preserver, and Destructor, respectively.

Shiva is revered as a Pillar of Light in every location where he manifested. (Jyotirlingas). It was thought that there were 64 Jyotirlinga, 12 of which were regarded as being divine.

Over a tridev gold mask, a jeweled crown of diamonds and other precious stones covers the Trimbakeshwar linga. According to legend, the jeweled crown dates back to the time of the Pandavas.

The Lord Shiva temple is 265 feet east-west long and 218 feet wide (north-south). Entry gates are on four sides: the East, West, South, and North.

According to spiritual conceptions, the directions of East and West signify the beginning, maturity, fulfillment, and completion, while the direction of the South represents revelation.

The giant entrance gate is on the north side of the temple bulwark, and only devotees use this entrance.

The Nagarakhana is 38 feet by 15 feet in size. Amrut kund, a lovely, small lake, is between the west and south entry gates.

This lake’s water is used for religious purposes. (pooja). Amrutkunda’s depth is the same as the temple’s height.

The main temple is in the expansive ground and faces east. It measures 131 feet in width from north to South and 160 feet from east to west.

The temple rises 96 feet above the ground; the dome’s diameter is 185 feet. The Peshave nobleman Annasaheb Vinchurakara had three golden pinnacles (Kalash) and a golden flag with the word “bulwark” on it.

The Nandi-pious Bull Temple of Lord Shiva is opposite the gate and faces the main temple. The main temple has three entrances, each on the east, South, and north sides.

After passing through the eastern gate, there is a lovely hall with a dome-shaped canopy. A turtle, a sacred symbol, is depicted on a marble surface that is 12 feet square.

Before catching a glimpse of God, one should put away their six vices—namely, passion, anger, greed, lust, temptation, and jealousy—just as a turtle withdraws its six limbs: head, tail, and four legs. If someone does that, they receive a defense similar to the turtle’s shield.

The temple’s main sanctum is on the west side. After descending five steps to the shrine, you will see the lovely Shiva ling in its tiled surroundings.

Three thumb-sized Ban lings represent Bramha, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Water, or Ganga, flows continuously from Shiv Bhagavan’s Ban ling. There is a marble statue of Goddess Parvati to the east of this Jyotirling.

Legend

Legend of Gautama Rishi: According to this legend, It is believed that Gautama Rishi and his wife Ahilya resided on the Brahmagiri hills.

People experienced hunger pangs during the 24-year famine. In the fields near his Ashram, Gautama Rishi sows rice every morning. Gautama’s Ashram in Trimbakeshwar had rain falling everywhere because Lord Varun, the rain god, was pleased with the sage.

God granted Gautama Rishi a bounty of food grains due to his steadfast devotion and consistent prayers.

He harvests the crop in the afternoon and feeds the Rishis who have taken refuge in Gautama’s Ashram due to the famine.

The merit of Gautam Rishi increased as a result of all these Hrishi blessings. Due to Gautam Rishi’s elevated position, Lord Indras also experience jealousy.

So that women would leave, Rishis would return, and Gautam Rishi’s merits would be diminished, Lord Indra ordered clouds to rain down on the Trimbakeshwar.

Gautama continued to feed the Rishis while requesting that everyone remain. Envious of him, the other Rishi sent a cow to Gautam Rishi’s field.

Cow perished when Gautam Rishi attempted to scare it off his fields—Jaya, who had assumed the form of a cow and was the friend of Goddess Paravati.

Gautama offered worship to Lord Shiva to be cleansed of his sins and pleaded with him to let the Ganga River flow freely.

After releasing Ganga, Lord Shiva instructed her to remain there. People worship the Godavari River as Ganga at the current Kushavarta Pond. All the Rishis asked Lord Shiva to stay there, and Lord Shiva complied by creating Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga.

Legend of Lord Shiva’s Avatar: Another legend states that Lord Shiva took the form of a Linga (an abstract representation of the divine) at Trimbakeshwar to purify himself of the sin of killing a Brahmin.

It is said that the Trimbakeshwar Linga has three faces, symbolizing Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.

Legend of Sage Gautama and Ahilya: According to this legend, Sage Gautama’s wife Ahilya was cursed to turn into a stone because of her infidelity.

Lord Rama, who was passing by the area, relieved Ahilya of the curse, and she turned back into a human. The spot where this incident occurred is now known as Ram Kund, and it is considered a sacred place for Hindus.

These legends and many others have contributed to the significance and reverence of the Trimbakeshwar Temple among Hindus. A visit to the temple is believed to bring spiritual fulfillment and blessings.
